The Board of Trustees (BOT) and Executive Council of the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria, (IBAN), have outlined key action plans aimed at addressing pressing challenges in the broadcasting industry.

The resolutions were made during a joint meeting hosted yesterday by Channels Media Group, which was held in Abuja.

In an issued communiqué, signed by IBAN Chairman, John Momoh, and Secretary, Charles Daniels, the association emphasised the need for engagement with regulatory bodies such as the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, (ARCON). 

Given the rapid technological advancements in the industry, IBAN stressed that Nigerian broadcasters must not be left behind in the evolving global media landscape.

Some of the key resolutions reached during the meeting include: ‘Regulatory Engagement’ – whereby  IBAN will actively engage regulators to create a more favorable broadcasting environment in response to changing technology and content consumption patterns; Capacity-Building – whereby members of the association agreed to enhance collaboration in training and development initiatives to strengthen the skills and expertise of broadcasters.

Also included is: Digital Switch-Over (DSO) Concerns, whereby the stalled implementation of the DSO process has left broadcasters in financial distress, with investments made through borrowed funds yet to yield returns Regarding this, IBAN called for urgent stakeholder engagement to revive and complete the transition.

On Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Broadcasting  –   the association, recognising the impact of AI on the media landscape, underscored the need for Nigerian broadcasters to embrace and integrate new technologies.

The growing patronage of foreign media at the expense of local broadcasters was also identified as a major concern. On this, IBAN proposed discussions with the Government on implementing a surcharge to level the playing field.

Regarding financial support for broadcasters, the association stated that it will seek Government intervention in the form of stimulus packages and access to low-interest loans to support the industry.

The association further stated that a committee has been set up to plan a major industry conference to further address the challenges and opportunities in the Nigerian broadcasting landscape.

IBAN reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a thriving and competitive media industry that adapts to technological advancements while ensuring sustainability for local broadcasters.
